Campaign: To encourage teachers to support young carers

I work with young carers and am aware of some of the challenges they face.

Among them, teachers can struggle to understand the responsibilities that some of their students have at home.

This can make getting an education difficult for young carers, as they might find it hard to focus and can’t devote time to study outside of school.

I’m working with a team, which includes young carers, to highlight some of the things that teachers could do to make life easier for pupils who look after loved ones.

Setting up support groups and offering some flexibility could make all the difference to a young carer who is struggling to balance home and school.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with this Fix:

The Junction Foundation

Thank you to Courtney Winward, Eileen Cowle, Elleane McDonald, Ellie Clarke, Hannah Winn, Lilith Telford, Teegan McLoughlin and Tialeoni Smailes from the Junction Foundation who supported us throughout this campaign and helped us put our Fixers leaflet together.

March 2015

We launched our project at St Peter's School in Middlesbrough.

Leaflets were placed on chairs in the hall for pupils to read and more were taken by teachers to distribute to tutor groups later in the day.

Afterwards, two students came forward to ask for support in their role as young carers and we received positive comments from others in attendance. You can read some of their comments below.

'I think the leaflet is well designed and it was a good and highly informative presentation.'

'It's excellent to see support being made available and this was an excellent presentation!'

'This was inspiring.'

'This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn about young carers and raise awareness. It has certainly opened my eyes.'

'I found this incredibly useful because I had no idea that I was a young carer.'

'This is excellent support and great for awareness.'
