Campaign: | To show the benefits of art education |
Two-years-ago, I was diagnosed with dyslexia, dyspraxia and Irlen Syndrome, which means reading and writing is often a struggle for me.
At school I was called ‘slow’ and it really affected my self-esteem.
Although I still achieved good grades, I found myself having to work extremely hard for them.
Thankfully, doing art changed my life. I finally found something which came naturally to me and a way to express myself.
With Fixers, I’ve helped to produce a short film about my experiences.
Hopefully, it will show the importance of a creative education system, while helping others with learning disabilities to realise their true potential.
October 2015
We launched our Fixers to a group of young people with learning disabilities. Below is some feedback from the event.
‘It shows what people with hidden disabilities are like and shows that they can be confident. It's made me feel equal - like I wasn't the only one that was going through this at school.’
‘She was brave to tell her life story from her childhood.’
‘Brave girl! I could relate to it. I was the same at school.’
‘Makes me feel proud. She is brave. It is celebrating differences.’
‘Strong and powerful. People can identify easily with your challenges.’
‘Good choice of words and how to portray her frustration and the positive message of her success.’
‘Shows anyone with a disability can overcome it.’
‘Great personal experience - articulated her story well. It highlights the importance of positive self-esteem.’
