Campaign: | To encourage families to openly discuss death and bereavement |
My grandfather died when I was 14. It was a big shock and no-one really talked about it.
I struggled to cope with my loss as I had never discussed or learned about bereavement and I wasn’t aware of the impact it can have on things like mental health.
I started to self-harm and was referred to a counsellor who was then able to help me deal with my grief.
I don’t want other young people to feel unprepared when faced with death so I’m encouraging families to speak more openly about the subject.
Knowing what to expect and how to cope with grief can prepare people for losses in the future.
It’s no good pretending death doesn’t happen. It does and we need to be able to deal with it.
Adam Tidbury is helping me with this Fix.
