Campaign: | To help put a stop to FGM |
I experienced female genital mutilation (FGM) in Somalia when I was just 11-years-old.
At the time, I didn’t understand the lifelong consequences of the procedure, which is defined as intentionally altering or causing injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
Now I’m a young woman I’m conscious that I can never go back to who I was.
It was when I arrived in the UK that I began to question what I’d gone through and why I’d suffered.
With Fixers, I want to raise awareness of FGM, especially among those from communities where it’s a common cultural practice.
It’s something that should be discussed openly so those who could be affected are aware of its risks.
