Campaign: | To bring our local community together to clean up where we live |
In my local area of Aberdeenshire, I’m concerned that relations between school pupils and the community are sometimes strained.
Unfortunately, there are some students that drop litter, and this can lead to all of us being viewed negatively by older generations.
With the help of Fixers and staff from Kemnay Academy, my team and I decided to hold a litter picking event.
We wanted to do something to bring the community together – showing that young people do care about the local area and want to help make a difference.

Staff and students from Kemnay Academy in Aberdeenshire supported our Fix. They allowed us to use the school on the day of the litter pick and provided refreshments. The team at the school also helped us to reach out to the local community and pupils put on a musical performance after the event.
George Niblock, The Aberdeen Litter Initiative
The Aberdeen Litter Initiative supported our project. George Niblock, a representative from the campaign, attended our event and helped out on the day.
Thank you also to Liam and Fraser who helped us to research and plan for the litter pick.
November 2014
On Sunday 23rd November my team and I brought members of the community together with staff and pupils from Kemnay Academy, and pupils from a local primary school, to take part in a litter picking event.
The aim was to clean up the local area, while improving relations between local residents and school pupils. A representative from the Aberdeen Litter Initiative also joined us on the day.
Altogether, around 25 people helped out – collecting 30 bags of rubbish from the area surrounding Kemnay Academy, play areas, the High Street, local scout hut and parish hall.
Speaking about the project, George Niblock, from The Aberdeen Litter Initiative, said:
'It was most heartening to be invited to contribute to the initiative proposed by the senior pupils at Kemnay Academy and to assist them with their day of litter clearance in their local community.
'Unfortunately litter is dropped by a wide spectrum of people and not just the young. It is good to see young people recognising for themselves that it is not acceptable and making the effort to do something tangible about it.'
