Campaign: To involve young people in politics

I want to help young people have their voices heard on issues that matter to them and I want decision-makers to hear them.

That's why I'm holding a BBC-style Question Time event for young people, so they can discuss and debate important issues with representatives from the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Green Party and UK Independence Party.

It's going to be just one part of our larger campaign to engage more young people with politics - we want them to know that their voices are not going unheard and they can make a difference.

I want others to know that young people do have an interest in these issues and we want to provide them with a platform.

October 2014
We held the ‘Our Question Time’ event on Friday 10th October at Plymouth Guildhall. Around 100 young people attended and it was a great success.

We had five panellists - Alison Seabeck MP, Gary Streeter MP, William Dartmouth MEP, Andy Pratt and Dr Karen Stears – and throughout the evening they were asked to address a range of issues.

Why young people aren’t voting, the strain of tuition fees on young people looking to go to university, and the way sex and relationship education is taught in schools were among the topics discussed.

We’ve received the following positive feedback from our panellists and hope this will become an annual event.

Gary Streeter MP: ‘A huge well done for organising the Question Time event on Friday night. I thought it was extremely useful. It was great to see so many young people engaging actively in the political process and there was a palpable energy in the hall throughout the proceedings.’

Alison Seabeck MP: 'You are to be congratulated on the organisation of the event and the turnout. I hope you decide to do more - inviting other speakers or public figures to face questioning.  It confirmed my view that we should have votes at 16.’
