Campaign: | To raise awareness of autism within ethnic communities |
I don't think that autism is as understood as it should be within certain cultures.
Through research, I learned about the lack of autism awareness within Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities.
A study has shown that people with autism within ethnic minorities are less likely to be diagnosed, receive benefits or access appropriate services, and this could be down to cultural barriers.
Autism can still carry a stigma within certain cultures and I want to make sure that people are enlightened about the condition and where they can find help for it.
I want to raise awareness of autism within the BAME community and show parents and families that acceptance of autism can help them get support.
