Campaign: To encourage people not to use the word ‘gay’ in a negative way

Too often young people use the word ‘gay’ to mean something negative, either as an insult or to refer to something they don’t like.

But for many of us who are gay, the word forms a really important part of our identity, and to use it as a derogatory term can be hurtful.

With Fixers, I have helped create a film which examines the changing use of the word over time.

I want to reclaim the term and its more positive meaning.

Here is a list of Fixers helping me with this Fix:

Ab Darbo Sparta Alex Hayward
Alice Mills Amy Krzykala
Amy Snelling Andrew Jarvis
Bethane Jenkins Claudia Collins
Colin Cushion Dionne Evans
Emily Snelling Jordan Fletcher
Katie-Louise Davis Kristian Gowing
Liam Gathercole Rachel Pooley
Ryan Head Shannon Turnbull

Norfolk LGBT Project
Michelle Savage, Youth Development Worker at the Norfolk LGBT Project, has supported my Fix. She agreed to be interviewed to appear in the broadcast piece about my project.

October 2014

I’m a member of the Norfolk County Council’s Challenging Homophobia Partnership Group and shared my Fixers film with the group at their last meeting.

Following this presentation, and through the support of Sarah Rose from Stonewall, I received a letter from the Rt Hon Nicky Morgan MP, Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities.
